Best Roofing Materials for a Marietta Home

Posted on: September 29, 2016

The best roof for a home elsewhere in the country isn’t always what’s best for a home in the Marietta area. However, thanks to generally mild temperature fluctuations, especially during the winter months, this area can easily handle a wider variety of roofing materials than regions with sub-zero winters and blazing summers. If your new or existing home is ready for a new roof, the team at Fowler Homes will go over all of your roofing options with you, from styles to materials, in order to help you make the best decision.

Roofing Materials

There is an ever-expanding selection of materials available to you when choosing to install a new roof, ranging from the traditional roofing products (some of which have been around for centuries) to new technologies that offer traditional looks and better performance. Consider the following options when you discuss roofing materials with your Fowler Homes representative:

Asphalt Shingles

This remains the most common of roofing materials because it tends to be the least expensive to purchase and install. Asphalt roofs typically last for 20 to 30 years. They’re constructed of fiberglass or cellulose mixed with asphalt, which is then surfaced with crushed mineral or stone granules. The two basic types include the traditional single-layer variety and thicker, laminated products. Standard shingles are half as expensive, but laminated shingles can last up to 30 or 40 years. Algae resistant shingles are also available for use in humid climates to help prevent staining.

Shake Shingles

Wood has been the main roofing material for centuries, and it’s still a reasonable option, although fire codes forbid its use in some areas. While shake shingles can be treated to be fire resistant, over time these properties do tend to degrade. They’re typically made from redwood, cypress, southern pine, or western red cedar and have about the same life expectancy as asphalt but generally cost double the amount.

Composite Shingles

Nearly indistinguishable from real slate and wood, composite shingles are constructed of many recycled materials, from rubber tires to plastic and cellulosic materials. They’re often available in multiple widths and colors, enabling homeowners to create realistic shade variations and textures. The cost, however, is often higher than other materials.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is one of the most cost-effective roofing materials on the market. Available in steel, aluminum, and copper, metal roofs can last from 50 to 100 years and offer the best protection from wind, rain, and hail damage. Available in a variety of colors, a metal roof can contain a conventional vertical seam profile or manufactured to resemble slate, shingles, wood shake, or even clay tiles. If you prefer a more traditional look, you can also choose stone-coated steel roofing, which has the texture of asphalt shingles.
