Benefits of a Metal Roof

Posted on: January 13, 2017

Your roof protects both the contents and structure of your home while contributing to the comfort and safety of your family. Whether your home is a new build, or an existing structure in need of a roof replacement, metal roofing is a great option—in addition to adding monetary and aesthetic value to your home, they offer a number of significant benefits over more traditional roofing materials.

Metal Roofing Types

Once reserved for more industrial applications, metal roofs have gained popularity over the past decade, and are now one of the fastest growing industries in the home building market. The four main types of residential metal roofing are:

  1. Metal ShinglesA popular choice for those wanting the look of traditional asphalt shingles, with the benefits of metal. They are lightweight, easy to install, come in a variety of colors, and in a number of styles that bear a close resemblance to asphalt shingles, slate, and wooden shakes.
  2. Ribbed PanelWhile priced similarly to asphalt shingles, this type of metal roofing has exposed fasteners, which if installed incorrectly can cause issues with deterioration. However, when properly installed, a ribbed panel metal roof lasts between 40 and 50 years on average, and is a popular choice for Georgia homeowners.
  3. Standing Seam. This option is similar in looks to ribbed panel roofs, but the fasteners are hidden for added protection from the elements with watertight panels. Thanks to the clean profile, this type of roof is exceptionally versatile, for use on both modern and traditional style homes.
  4. Stone Coated SteelMetal coated with stone granules combines the look and feel of slate or tile, with the strength of steel.

What Differentiates a Metal Roof?

  1. Life expectancy. A professionally installed, well maintained metal roof should last between 40 and 70 years with manufacturer’s warranties varying anywhere from 20 to 50 years.
  2. Weight. Metal roofing materials weigh much less than concrete tile or standard roof tiles.
  3. Conductivity. Because radiant heat from the sun is reflected, heat gain is almost non-existent, reducing cooling costs during the summer months.
  4. Safety. Metal roofs are impervious to fire and their non-combustible nature earns them a Class A fire rating, for most resistant.
  5. Sustainability. Compared with asphalt shingles which account for tens of billions of pounds in waste each year, metal roofs are 100 percent recyclable at the end of their lifespan, and are typically made from between 25 to 90 percent recyclable materials.
  6. Durability. Aside from periodic inspection, metal roofs require little maintenance and can withstand most extreme weather, such as heavy winds, or hail.
